Toi market is a famous second-hand clothes market in Nairobi-Kibera slums area. It especially renowned for baby clothes; a niche thought to be the origin of the name ie toy/baby for “Toi”
Being a baby clothes market, expectant mothers are the largest number of customers expressing interest in visiting the Toi Market.  Mothers in all trimesters of pregnancy visit the market to buy fancy but inexpensive stuff for their on-coming newborns.  Infant clothes at the market range from t-shirts, vests, sweaters, tiny socks, shawls, dresses, bibs, Nappy-liners etc.

However, due to its growing popularity, among the young and classy people in town, other traders selling adult “mitumba” clothes have also invaded the market. What used to be an exclusive baby-clothing market is now turning out to have a balance between both sexes and all ages groups. In connection to the pioneer buyers, there are traders who exclusively sell “mother dresses” or “dress tops” that can be comfortably and acceptably worn during pregnancy.  Other Pregnancy -Wear clothing such as ballerina shoes, loose linen trousers and ordinary maternity dresses are also common.
Besides everything about the mother and the baby, jeans lovers will also immensely fall in love with the wide selection of second-hand untamed jeans. There is also an entire “area” reserved for traders selling decent leather outfits which include jackets for both ladies and gents. Leather pants/ overalls suitable for motorbike riders can also be found in the mix.

When you go to toi Market, pioneer traders will tell you how the market has evolved with time. Set aside also is a section for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables, Footwear, Mali mali items etc.
Not So cheap After All
Traders are taking advantage of the high popularity associated with the market. What was known as a thrift market for consumers have actually untouchable items. So if you are planning to go Toi Market with the conception of a thrift budget, you will be surprised. Instead just visit the open air market near you which will have near or similar prices; thus saving you the time to go far for the same value. Otherwise, if you insist, load your wallet quit fatly. Exceptionally cute clothes have even been given a nickname. If you are on a slim budget and hear the word “Camera Camera” don’t stop…..it will cost you a fortune close to going to Mr Price!!
Matatus / Buses to Get you to Toi Market
It is located just at the entrance of Kibera Slums in the upper hill area of Nairobi. From town, you can pick matatu number 8 which are usually found at railways bus station. If you are not sure, you can always tell the conductor to drop you –off at Toi Market which they will happily do
